Leaning against the plateau of Dombes region, dominating the vast plain of Ain, stands Pérouges. It’s the medieval city that you discovered and rediscovered with the same delight. Standing high on the hill, this village where no lord has ever reigned, a village that Savoy and Dauphiné long fought, finally became French by the traety of lyon in 1601. It was rescued from demolition at the beginning of the twentieth century thanks to the intervention of Edouard Herriot and the Defense Committee for the old Pérouges. Our city is particularly proud to be one of the most beautiful villages of France ; visitors enter through two doors, « the Porte d’en Bas » and « the Porte d’en haut » which leads out into the « Rue des Rondes » edged with small houses and generally without foundations, built with stones and pebbles. You will discovered its narrow and meandering lanes, the « Place de la halle » where there stands the magnificient « Arbre de la liberté », planted in 1792, and finally « l’Eglise Forteresse », with its central nave its keystone with Savoy coat of arms and its lateral chapels. Our village can be proud of having soon, years after years, of a lot of personalities, of the literary world, of Arts or politics, among whom SAINT-EXUPERY, René CLERC from the French Academy, UTRILLO the painter, and recently the president of the USA Bill CLINTON with his wife. This exceptional city has also attracted some film-makers : "Mister VINCENT", The Three Mousqueteers, "Mandrin", and for various TV series-producers. And it is this city, enjoyed by all visitors for its vast charm, that the municipality of Pérouges wishes to preserve, on the ere of the 21st century. |
